How to Start an Action Group in Your Area

Finding support for pregnancy, birth or postpartum needs can come in many shapes and sizes.

Many women find the need for a local support group.  You have many choices in organizations and style for what you need to reach out to your community or to surround yourself with the support that you need.

Birth Circles

A Birth Circle is usually a small group of women of like minds who get together to support one another throughout their pregnancies and after the baby is born.

BirthNetworks

BirthNetworks state that their local community groups help to “Empower birthing families and inspire confidence in women’s innate ability to give birth as they explore their birthing options.”  For more information, you can contact BirthNetwork International at http://www.birthnetwork.org/

Friends of Midwives Groups

Depending on your state, Friends of Midwives groups range from support of moms who have used midwives in birthing to helping with legislation and protection efforts in individual states.  For more information on your local Friends of Midwives group, see our State Information Pages.

ICAN

Local ICAN chapters support women throughout the process of Cesarean Recovery and VBAC.

Trust Birth Facilitators

Trust Birth’s website says “How wonderful that you care so much about babies and mothers and birth that you are willing to be part of an all volunteer organization dedicated to one goal:  Help Others TRUST BIRTH!”  There is more information on their website here:  http://www.trustbirth.com/becomeleader.html
