I wish this website had a "Like" button, because I would click it for all 3 comments posted so far (on 8/19/11). The medical board has no business regulating birth and midwifery.

How bloody ridiculous! Simple question: Which causes more harm? A person (not just a midwife) helping a mother to deliver a child that is coming into this world naturally. Or. Attempting to force a mother to NOT give birth to her child, causing undue and harm & stress on both mother, and child, All in the name of Allopathic medicines screwed up priorities and legal games of Cover You A$$.

As a father of a child born through the assistance of Midwives, and being a practitioner of naturopathic therapies myself, I feel that the medical field on the whole, and those who blindly trust medical "expertise" have lost the plot regarding child birth and health-care in general. (A true detriment to human development) The oldest practice of human existence and continuation has become over-run by public and individual ignorance of this natural process, fueled by the influence of insurance and medical businesses declaring proprietary ownership of individual rights to personal choices. (and convenient protections of their collective butts)

While I do feel western medicine has it's place in dealing the emergencies and some health conditions. Individuals should be more self-reliant and educated, and never allow business to have power over individual choices.

It is unfortunate that there is a model set in the mind of many, that if they are incapable of taking care of themselves, and anyone renders aide, that they have the entitlement to pursue legal action against those whom render aide, just because they don't like the outcome of their own unfortunate choices. This victim mentality only seems to come from those who don't claim responsibility for their own (in)actions. (Ever hear of the Good Samaritan Laws)

This smacks of selfishness on both the side of those individuals who have not learned to take care of themselves and accept their own responsibility for these choices, and on the side of Allopathic medicine, education, and governance for enabling individuals to become dependent upon businesses and government to make life choices for them.

So, which is more harmful to our families and our children? Being self-reliant and proactive in our conscious choices, or becoming submissive to social agreements manipulated by businesses profits. Your choices impact others, so choose wisely and accept accountability for your choices.

My wife and I make the choices for our family consciously, and together. And accept the responsibility of those choices. Which is why we chose a Midwife and all the possibilities that came with that choice over medical advice.

What that prosecutor did to Katie McCall was criminal. Did the mother die? Did the baby die? NO to both. Having had 5 children myself, only twice did I feel like I had good birth care. My first they knocked me out completely (which I never signed on for); the second was a great doctor (in Calif. I might add); the third 3 "licensed professionals" held my legs together and yelled at me that I couldn't deliver yet as I wasn't in the deliveryroom yet (thanks to not believing me and checking soon enough in the labor room when I TOLD them the baby was crowning); the fourth was the worst. I was in the delivery room and my ob said I had to wait for the anesthesiologist to administer a shot (in my back) when I clearly told him I didn't want the shot as she was crowning but he grabbed my by the shoulders and pulled me up, onto her head no less, when the anesth. finally got there and gave me a shot I DID NOT WANT. After the wonderful birth of my fifth baby (in the hallway with my doc pushing my labor bed towards the delivery room) I had to have surgery to repair a muscle that had been torn from my uterus during my fourth birth. I would have given anything to have had Katie with me for 3 of my 5 births. How many prospective mothers will have to go through the hell I did because Katie can't be there with them? This is an outrage and a disgrace to the state of Calif. Katie is a wonderful woman who has given her life to helping pregnant women deliver safely. She is licensed, a fact the jury was not allowed to know thanks to the idiot judge. They should be ashamed of themselves. Especially the parents. Now they will undoubly go after money which was probably what they wanted in the first place, but their attorney told them they had to file a criminal complaint first so the pickings would be easier. Shame, Shame on all of them.

This was not a good situation, because this woman, who is now a Licensed Midwife, was an "apprentice" at the time. She was apparently not enrolled in any accredited program. That said, when will the midwives in California wake up and demand their own board? Then we can police ourselves instead of dealing with an overzealous prosecuting board which not that long ago was putting women in jail on a wholesale basis across the state for "practicing medicine without a license." Katie should not have been convicted of that -- perhaps "practicing midwifery without a license," but this same board licensed her. does that make sense to anyone?

The chiropractors have their own board to prevent this situation of the MDs telling them what to do -- the acupuncturists have their own board -- same reason. In Calif. there are 2 nursing boards: RNs & LVNs so the MDs can't tell them what to do.

WAKE UP MIDWIVES of California -- WE NEED OUR OWN BOARD!!

Hi!

I'm the author of Momover, and I'd just love to chime in with a few thoughts!

I in fact didn't have two Cesareans in 18 months. I only have one child.

I wish I had known that postpartum hemorrhage was fairly typical with a C-section. I absolutely did find it traumatic, which I've blogged about on the Momover website.

Here's a link:

http://momover.net/2011/05/31/the-one-thing-i-have-in-common-with-christy-turlington/

And I do so hope you got something worthwhile out of my book. It is meant to help women, and is intensively researched, but the content is definitely positioned in fairly lighthearted way.

All best,
Dana Wood

ACNM's only response to the questions about the summit via Facebook:

Shannon Mitchell: Where can someone find out more about the upcoming Home Birth Summit that members of ACNM is participating in?

(name withheld) love to hear more about it too.

Lorrie Kline Kaplan (ACNM):
The Home Birth Summit will take place in October in northern Virginia. It is being facilitated by the Future Search Network, using a process they have honed for building consensus on controversial topics. Part of their method is invitation-only participation, to ensure that all parties who affect access to home birth are "at the table" in a setting conducive to working through the tough issues. You can learn more about the method at www.futuresearch.net/.

Shannon Mitchell: So how does one go about being invited or finding out who has been invited? What criteria is being used to determine the "all parties who affect access" and who is defining "home birth"? I've read over Future Search's information but there is very little information on this meeting or what the goals are, so it's hard to see how it is applicable in this situation. Will there be a statement of agenda, clarity on the issue that are being determined to be relevant, how can one have input into the situation?
